WATER TREATMENT PLANT FOR WATER REUSE IN THE BEVERAGE INDUSTRY

WATER TREATMENT PLANT (WTP) FOR WATER REUSE IN THE BEVERAGE INDUSTRY

THE CLIENT’S CHALLENGE

A beverage industry company located in the state of Rio de Janeiro faced a common paradox in the sector. Its production process generated wastewater with a high organic load, resulting from beverage manufacturing. This water underwent treatment to meet discharge standards and was then discarded.

The client approached GIGWATER with a clear objective: to develop a system that would enable water reuse from the treated effluent, reducing operating costs and decreasing the operation’s water footprint.

The technical challenge involved treating water with a high organic load, represented by parameters such as COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand), and ensuring that the recovered water achieved sufficient quality to be reapplied in non-critical stages of the industrial process.

THE SOLUTION DEVELOPED BY GIGWATER

We designed a Water Treatment Plant for water reuse. The system capacity is 25 m³/h, sized to meet the plant’s reuse demand.

The treatment is carried out in two main stages, both using FRP vessels, a material chosen for its corrosion resistance and durability in industrial environments.

The first stage consists of a multimedia filter designed to remove suspended solid particles and reduce water turbidity. This initial filtration prepares the effluent for the next stage. The second stage is an activated carbon filter, responsible for removing residual color, dissolved organic matter, odor, and significantly reducing the water’s COD. This stage is essential to ensure that the recovered water does not interfere with the industrial processes in which it will be reused.

The system also includes a backwash water tank made of polyethylene, ensuring periodic cleaning of the filters without interrupting the treatment process. pH and conductivity meters and analyzers continuously monitor the quality of the treated water.

One of the project’s key differentiators is its full automation. The system operates through an electrical command and control panel that identifies the incoming effluent and analyzes whether it meets the required parameters to proceed through treatment and be directed for reuse. This control logic prevents out-of-specification water from advancing through the process, protecting the final quality of the recovered water.

We delivered the complete project, including process flow diagram, mechanical design, electrical design, equipment manufacturing, on-site implementation at the client’s facility, and assisted start-up.

THE PROJECT RESULTS AND BENEFITS

With the implementation of the Water Treatment Station for water reuse, the beverage industry began utilizing a resource that was previously simply discarded. The benefits observed include:

REDUCTION IN WATER CONSUMPTION FROM THE UTILITY PROVIDER

REDUCTION IN THE VOLUME OF EFFLUENT DISCHARGED

REDUCED USE OF CHEMICAL PRODUCTS

FAST RETURN ON INVESTMENT
